Hammondsport Wineries

3 to 14 miles; easy cycling
Mostly level, with hilly optional rides
County map: Steuben

The rides start at the square in the village of Hammondsport at the south end of Keuka Lake.
Hammondsport is the hub of the major wine-producing region of the eastern United States. The area produces a greater variety of table wines than any other in the world. The industry was a thriving one in the second half of the nine-teenth century, but only four companies here survived Prohibition. Today there are five wineries in the area bordering Keuka Lake, and over thirty-five in the Finger Lakes region with new small wineries appearing each year. Informative brochures are available from the New York Wine-Grape Foundation, Elm and Liberty Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527.
